The Civil Commitment Working Group is working on a community-based, participatory action research project surveying the conditions at civil commitment facilities in Illinois. We seek to educate our incarcerated members, outside allies, and the general public about this hidden form of incarceration, advocate for people detained at this facility through direct service, and mobilize communities to take action to end civil commitment alongside all other forms of incarceration. We are working to publish the results of the research survey and also working on a public archive to preserve and share the testimonies and experiences of LGBTQ+ people detained in civil commitment.
